Time Period: 2-3 days (to allow for peformances)
Lesson Objective
The student will learn the rhythmic value of the quarter, half, and whole note. The student will use this understanding of rhythmic note values to create their own 8 measure rhythmic pattern and present and perform it in class.

Procedure
ENGAGEMENT
1. Students will view video clip of STOMP to engage their interest in rhythms and patterns: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ik8jICj8juc
EXPLORATION
2. Students will be introduced to the topic "Rhythmic Values of Notes" by instructor in class. Students will be given rhythm sticks and asked to repeat rhythmic patterns recorded and played back on an ipod. Students will asked to pay close attention to the different lengths of varioues notes played.

3. Students will view Sketchcast on rhythmic note values and counting beats at home or after school:

4. Students will complete practice examples of counting and clapping beats at home.
EXTENSION
5. Students will come prepared to construct an eight measure rhythmic pattern with in-class partner.
6. Upon returning to class, students will practice note values learned with partner using note value flashcards viewed on Studyblue website.

7. Then students will work together with partners to create an eight measure original rhythmic pattern using noteflight.com.

EVALUATION / ASSESSMENT
8. Each student pair will practice and then perform their original rhythmic pattern by clapping or using rhythm sticks in front of the rest of the class.
(This may to be a multiple F2F class time lesson in order to complete the entire lesson.)
